The Public Records Act (PRA) is currently codified in Government Code section 6250.
A few years ago, the California Legislature decided that the PRA was disorganized and confusing.
In order to simplify and re-organize the PRA, the California Legislature asked the California Law Review Commission to recodify the PRA and begin its numbering at 7931.000.
The recodification was enacted and will go into effect on January 1, 2023.
This change will be uncomfortable for many of the lawyers and public agency employees that frequently use the provisions within the PRA.
For example, law enforcement agencies frequently refer to Government Code section 6254(f) when responding to public records requests.
However, after January 1, 2023, Section 6254(f) will be located at various locations throughout the PRA according to the new numbering system.
In order to help practitioners and public agencies employees, Best Best & Krieger will launch a mobile app that will include a conversion table that will allow any user to put in the old Government Code section and discover where it is in the new numbering.
Conversion tables are available online but they are not interactive, making the app quite unique and useful.
